National Immigrants Day – October 28th
The USA was founded and built entirely by immigrants. Immigration was handled by the individual states, until 1890, when Europeans began immigrating en masse due to economic catastrophe or restrictive politics in their home countries. The US Federal Government began to regulate immigration then and made Ellis Island in New York the primary point of entry.
Between 1890 and 1954, more than 12 million immigrants passed through Ellis Island. In return for pledging allegiance and loyalty to the US, immigrants were given all the rights and privileges afforded US citizens. For 80 percent of them, the entire process only took a few hours.
October 28th is also the anniversary of the dedication of the Statue of Liberty. In 1886, President Grover Cleveland dedicated the giant gift from France, followed by New York City’s first ticker tape parade.
