I Love Lucy Day – October 15th

The I Love Lucy show premiered this day in 1951 and went on to record 180 episodes over 6 seasons. The show featured daily family life in New York City including Desi’s career in the entertainment business and Lucy’s time as a bored housewife. Vivian Vance and William Frawley played the couple’s neighbors. The show was created by Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz who were married at the time in real life. I Love Lucy was at the top of the ratings charts for four of its six seasons, including its last. It has been translated into dozens of languages and was voted The Best Sitcom of All Time in a 2012 ABC/People Magazine poll.
Lucille Ball has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, one for film and one for television. She won five Emmys as well as multiple lifetime achievement awards. She was the first woman to own and manage a major Hollywood studio—in the 1960s Desilu Productions produced many popular TV shows, including Mission: Impossible and Star Trek.
