International Sloth Day – October 20th

International Sloth Day – October 20th

Native to Central and South America, sloths live solitary lives and travel from tree to tree using the canopy vines in tropical forests. They eat leaves, twigs, and buds. Their metabolism is so slow that they can survive on little food. Although sloths are mammals, their metabolism confines them to warm climates, and they tend to adopt behaviors of cold-blooded animals, sunning themselves like reptiles. Before the last ice age melt (12,000 years ago) some sloth species grew to the size of elephants. Today many sloths are endangered in Brazil due to the clearing of the rainforest.
