International Tea Day – December 15
The story goes that the Chinese began drinking tea nearly 5,000 years ago when Emperor Shen Nung drank from a pot of boiled water that contained some tree leaves that had blown into the pot. Tea has since become one of the most consumed beverages in the world with more than 20,000 varieties.
New Delhi, India first celebrated International Tea Day on this day in 2005 which has since inspired multiple countries and organizations to adopt the holiday, including the United Nations which said, “The day will promote and foster collective actions to implement activities in favor of the sustainable production and consumption of tea and raise awareness of its importance in fighting hunger and poverty.”
