National Lager Day – December 10
As we celebrate one of the most popular beers in the world, especially in America, we give a shout out to the father of the modern lager, 18th century beer genius Benjamin (Benno) Scharl. “Lager” literally means “to store.” The technique involved storing beer in cold beer cellars for prolonged periods, using bottom-fermenting yeast.
At the age of 15 Benno Scharl began a three-year apprenticeship as a beer brewer at the Faberbräu brewery in Munich. He later entered the Jesuit order as a lay brother and attended the Jesuit novitiate school. Throughout his career, he was known for bringing technologies for modernizing and standardizing breweries and agricultural processes, including hops cultivation. One of his written works, Description of the Brown Beer Brewery in the Kingdom of Bavaria, published posthumously by the Agricultural Association in Baiern, became an early guide for brewing Bavarian lagerbiers at the start of the 1800s. By mid-century, Bohemian techniques from Plzn lent their method for making light, golden lagers by their choice of water and barley.
All these processes and ingredients (including the preservative properties of Bavarian Hops) were then imported to America and adopted by what would become industry giants including Pabst, Schlitz, Miller, and Anheuser-Busch.
