Wombat Day – October 22nd

Wombat Day – October 22nd

Wombats are cute little marsupials, closely related to koalas, that are found in Australia and Tasmania. They are impressive diggers! They dig complex burrows up to 9 feet deep and 20 feet long, with branching chambers. A group of wombats is called a “mob.” Young wombats can stay in their mother’s pouch for up to 20 months. A wombat’s marsupial pouch faces backwards, which is useful, but makes for an embarrassing selfie for that young, social-media-savvy wombat who still lives at home. Wombat Day is celebrated on this date in Australia to coincide with Spring planning.
