The Alamo Day – February 24

On this day in 1836, the siege of the Alamo began when Mexican General (and sometimes President) Antonio López de Santa Anna, whose own politics had sparked the resistance, attacked the Texas rebels who had taken refuge in a walled mission in San Antonio. The approximate 200 Texan defenders fought intensely, holding off an army of thousands of attackers for 13 days, before finally being overwhelmed and killed by Santa Anna’s forces on March 6th.

Notable persons involved in the Alamo siege included James Bowie (a famous knife fighter and leader of the volunteers), William B. Travis (the 26-year-old commander of the Alamo garrison), and Davy Crockett (a legendary frontiersman and former U.S. Congressman). The Alamo siege became a symbol of Texan defiance and played a pivotal role in inspiring recruitment and support for the Texan army to secure an ultimate victory, which resulted in Texas’ independence from Mexico.
