When you think of Martha Stewart you may think of hosting parties, cooking, gardening, decorating, or crafts, or maybe some of her books or magazines. In fact, if you like these things, you could spend half your day getting ideas from https://www.marthastewart.com. Stewart came by all those talents honestly from her parents and grandparents. She applied her business acumen and gained great success in several industries and mediums including broadcasting, merchandising, and e-commerce, starting with a small catering business and book called Entertaining that was published in 1982.
We honor this House Management Diva’s skill, determination, and grace on this day because in 2004, Martha Stewart began her sentence of 5 months of incarceration at Alderson Federal Prison Camp for insider trading and obstruction of justice.
Stewart had avoided a loss of $45,000 by selling her ImClone Systems stock in 2001 after receiving nonpublic information from her broker at Merrill Lynch that an FDA decision would have a negative effect on the stock. The media called it a witch hunt because Martha was a celebrity and it seemed the prosecution was eager to make an example. Upon indictment, Stewart had stepped down as CEO and Chairwoman of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (MSLO). She paid hundreds of thousands in legal fees and court fines.
While in prison, it is said she became a kind of representative between the inmates and the prison administration. In 2008, the UK refused to grant her a visa to enter the United Kingdom because of her felony record; she had been booked to speak at the Royal Academy on fashion and leisure.
Upon release, she was advised to remain employed and not to associate with persons who had criminal records (like Snoop Dog). But in the Fall of 2016, Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party premiered on VH1, featuring games, recipes, and musical guests. The first episode was called “Putting the Pot in Potluck” with guests: Ice Cube, Seth Rogan, and Wiz Khalifa. Martha successfully relaunched her career and her empire, winning Daytime Emmy Awards and making deals with executives at Costco, eBay, Macy’s, and PetSmart to sell her brands.

Cocktail Du Jour – Snoop Dog’s Indoggo Gin & Juice
- 2 oz Indoggo® Gin (Snoop’s own brand)
- 2 oz pineapple juice
- Club Soda
Add gin and juice to a tall glass with ice and stir. Top with club soda. Garnish with a pineapple slice.
Mocktail Du Jour – Martha Stewarts’ Pineapple-Guava Mocktail
- Peeled, cored, and chopped pineapple
- Pinch of coarse salt
- ½ cup guava juice (or passion fruit)
- 1 tablespoon lime juice, freshly squeezed
- 2 teaspoons of grenadine syrup
In a blender, puree pineapple with salt. Fill a pint glass with ice. Pour in guava or passion-fruit juice and lime juice. Add grenadine syrup; let settle (don’t stir). Gently spoon 1/2 cup puree on top.
