Cult followers of Breakfast at Tiffany’s (novella published in 1958 and film released on this day in 1961) were either Truman Capote fans or Audrey Hepburn fans, or both, even though Capote had asked for other actresses to play the part of Holly Golightly, including Marilyn Monroe, and Shirley MacLaine, both of whom turned down the offer. In the end, the film was nominated for multiple awards. Hepburn as Holly with her high hair and sunglasses is an icon of 20th century cinema. 

Asian groups have long protested the director’s casting of Mickey Rooney as Japanese character, Mr. Yunioshi. For the 45th anniversary edition DVD release, producer Richard Shepherd apologized, “If we could just change Mickey Rooney, I’d be thrilled with the movie.” Rooney later said that many Chinese people had told him he was very funny in the role.
