Albert Einstein Day – November 14th

Holiday: Peter Weyland Day

“If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.” – Albert Einstein

On this day in 1908, Einstein presented his Quantum Theory of Light, which stated that light operated at a constant speed despite space and time, that light was composed of tiny bundles of energy known as photons, and that each photon carried a quantity of energy equal to the product of the frequency of vibration of that photon and Planck’s constant (kinetic energy equals the light frequency times a constant). In this theory, Albert Einstein also explained the process of emission of electrons from metals that are struck by lightning, called the photoelectric effect, which later led to the invention of television.
Einstein grew up in Munich, Germany, and did his advanced schooling in Zurich, Switzerland to become a physicist and teacher while working as a patent clerk. In 1914 he became the Director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Physical Institute and Professor at the University of Berlin. In 1921 he won the Nobel prize for theoretical physics. In 1933 he renounced his German citizenship after being targeted by the Nazi Party and came to Princeton University in America where he finished his career. After World War II, he was offered, and declined, the Presidency of the new State of Israel. Einstein’s theory of relativity changed the science community’s understanding of space, and his Quantum Theory formed the basis of a new science, Quantum Mechanics.

Music Du Jour: Albert was a classical music fan. Playing his instruments helped him complete his theoretical arguments. He began studying the violin at age 6 and also played piano. His favorite composers were Mozart and Bach.
