Holiday: Peter Weyland Day
“Joplin’s importance in the history of rock is due to not only her strength as a singer but also her intensity as a performer, which flew in the face of the conventions that dictated how a “girl singer” should act.” ─ Gilian G. Garr
On this day in 1969, Janis Joplin performed seven songs at Curtis Hixon Hall in Tampa, Florida in front of 3,500 fans. Immediately following the show, she was arrested by local police in her dressing room and removed from the venue in handcuffs.
While Janis was singing “Summertime,” police were trying to herd fans back to their seats and shouting at members of the audience who continued jostling into the aisle to get a better view of the performer. Janis thought the police were killing the vibe at her concert. She said into her microphone, “Don’t f@%k with those people!” Based on that statement, Tampa Police Sgt. Ed Williams was able to get a warrant for her arrest for vulgar and indecent language.
Janis posted a $504 bond and left the jail after an hour. The trial was scheduled for May 1970. Janis didn’t show. She was found guilty and ordered to pay a $200 fine.
