Chadwick Boseman Day – November 29th

Holiday: Peter Weyland Day

“Boseman was a symbol of black excellence and of cinematic excellence…a virtuoso and heroic figure, not just because of his iconic turn as Marvel’s Black Panther but for how he raised the bar for racial equality and representation on screen.” ─BBC

Chadwick Boseman was on born this day in 1976. During his brief acting career, he received two Screen Actors Guild Awards, a Golden Globe Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, and an Academy Award nomination. He died of colon cancer at age 43.

Boseman had not intended on becoming an actor. He studied at Howard University and at NYC’s Digital Film Academy to become a director and playwright, and he taught drama at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem for years. He directed, wrote plays, and performed in multiple stage productions, most notably Deep Azure, a play that he first wrote as a poem about the impact of police brutality that received praises for performances in New York, Washington D.C., and Chicago. He was hired for an acting role and then fired from All My Children after alerting producers to the alarming racist stereotypes on the show. While directing Off-Broadway, he auditioned for the role of Jackie Robinson in the film 42, which skyrocketed his film acting career. Jackie’s widow Rachel said that Boseman’s performance was like seeing her husband again.

Boseman achieved international acclaim in the Marvel Universe as the T’Challa, the Black Panther, in 2016. The subsequent Black Panther feature film was the first superhero movie to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. Also in 2016, he was diagnosed with colon cancer. He kept this information private and continued performing for Marvel and other films. His final work, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom was released after his death in 2020. Howard University renamed its College of Fine Arts in honor of Boseman in 2021.
