Pearl Harbor Day – December 7

On this day in 1941, Pearl Harbor in Oahu, Hawaii, was attacked at 7:48 AM by 177 planes from the Imperial Japanese Navy that had stealthily positioned themselves in striking range. The attack was a concerted effort with attacks on British, Dutch, and U.S. territories in the South Pacific, and was intended to render the U.S. unable to respond, even though America had not yet entered the war.

An hour later, the Japanese sent another 168 planes to continue the bombing. By 10 AM, 21 US warships had been sunk or severely damaged and 2,403 American servicemen and women had been killed. It was the first major attack on American soil, the likes of which would not be seen again until the World Trade Center attack on September 11, 2001. While the effort was meant to discourage the U.S. from retaliating against Japan, the following day Congress declared war on the Japanese Empire at the behest of President Roosevelt, and two days later they included Germany and Italy in their declaration, unifying the nation against the world’s fascist antagonists.
