On this day in 1966 Star Trek first aired on television. Gene Roddenberry created the series and sold the pilot to NBC, which filmed 79 episodes.
Star Trek was the first science fiction series for an adult audience in the U.S. with complex storylines using the same main characters every week. Its plot, science, and character diversity influenced decades of science fiction. Roddenberry is recognized for casting women and minorities in leadership roles on the Enterprise, helping to break the mold of Hollywood casting stereotypes.
While the original series only lasted three years before it was cancelled, reruns, fan clubs, and conventions continued to boost the popularity of the show and the Star Trek franchise, which eventually gave birth to 13 more TV shows and 14 films. In 1976, NASA named its first space shuttle orbiter Enterprise in honor of the Star Trek starship.

Cocktail Du Jour – Romulan Ale Fizz
Romulan Ale is illegal throughout Federation territories, so prepare this drink at your own risk. This version of the Romulan Ale Fizz was designed by John de Bary.
⦁ 1 oz gin
⦁ 1.5 oz blue curaçao
⦁ 0.75 oz lemon juice, freshly squeezed
⦁ 0.5 oz simple syrup
⦁ 1 egg white
⦁ 2 ounces tonic water
⦁ 4 drops orange blossom water
Chill a Collins glass filled with ice and cold water in the refrigerator. Put blue curaçao, lemon juice, simple syrup and egg white into a shaker, and dry-shake (without ice). Add ice to the shaker and shake again. Empty the water and ice from the Collins glass and replace with the shaker contents poured through a strainer. Top with the tonic water and top with the orange blossom water.

Beer Du Jour
The Federation of Beer in Canada commissions breweries for particular Star Trek brews. See if one or more of these labels are available near you: https://www.federationofbeer.com/brews
If you can’t find an official Star Trek brew in your town, try a Heineken. They used to run illustrated ads using cartoons of Spock.
Wine Du Jour
Here’s a plug for William Shatner’s Brown Bag Wine Tasting show. You can stream several of these episodes online at http://www.ora.tv/brownbagwinetasting featuring entertaining conversations that eventually circle around to wine—his guests are required to describe the wines in unique ways.
Our recommendation for Wine Du Jour is to drink a label you know you already enjoy, but put the bottle in a paper bag and try describing it using Star Trek metaphors.
