You’re probably familiar with Cinco de Mayo because you crave margaritas on the 5th of May, but that is not Independence Day for Mexico.
On September 16 in 1810, Father Hidalgo (one of the leaders of the Mexican War of Independence) rallied with the townspeople of Dolores and gave his speech known as “El Grito de Dolores,” the Cry of Dolores, which declared their independence from Spain. 12 years of fighting later, Mexico won its independence and freedom for the natives after almost 300 years of slavery under Spanish rule.
The President of Mexico rings the Dolores church bell the evening before the celebration in front of an audience of hundreds of thousands. Red, white, and green lags adorn buildings and vehicles. People celebrate with fiestas, mariachi music, and lots of food. Throughout the night you will hear “Viva México! Viva la Independencia! Vivan los héroes!”
