On this day in 1977 Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak incorporated Apple Computer, Inc. In March 1976, Steve Wozniak finished building a home computer around the affordable and recently invented MOS Technology chip that would soon become the Apple I. He took it to his Homebrew Computer Club meeting to show it off, where Steve Jobs took an immediate interest.
In 1983 the company announced the birth of the Macintosh 128k. They paid for an ad at Super Bowl XVIII on January 22, 1984, directed by Ridley Scott called Big Brother, based on the 1984 story by George Orwell, which made the home computer popular with college students and academics. Jobs and Wozniak left Apple in 1985 after political differences with management. After years of struggles at the company, Jobs returned in 1997 (after a successful stint at Pixar) and began restructuring the company’s product line, introducing the iPod in 2001, followed by iTunes, the iPad, the iPhone, Apple Stores, the Apple Watch and several other products and services. Jobs resigned in 2011 before dying of pancreatic cancer later that year. He was replaced by Tim Cook. Wozniak still represents Apple at events and in interviews. Apple is now a trillion-dollar company.
