On this day in 1958, millions of grasshoppers caused serious damage across the State of Colorado and its neighboring states. The grasshopper plague decimated farmers’ fields, divebombed tourists, and cost $60 million in lost crops and millions in other damage. The same year, grasshoppers in Ethiopia and Somalia blocked out the sun with an estimated horde of 40 billion insects capable of consuming 40,000 tons of food per day. It was the spark of an extended famine in Ethiopia that spanned two decades.

Grasshoppers have been a symbol of wisdom and luck (both good and bad) across many cultures and serve as a reminder that when in doubt, follow your intuition and take a leap of faith.

The Grasshopper cocktail was invented at Tujague’s, the historic bar and restaurant in New Orleans.

• 1 oz crème de menthe
• 1 oz crème de cacao
• 2 oz heavy cream

Shake all ingredients with ice and strain into a coupe glass. Top with a squirt of whipped cream and a fresh mint leaf. Chocolate syrup over the whipped cream is optional.

Mocktail Du Jour – Grasshopper Mocktail

• 1 oz crème de menthe syrup
• 1 oz crème de cacao syrup
