Captain Morgan Day – January 28

Sir Henry Morgan of Wales was one of the most successful buccaneers (pirates) of all time. With the (unofficial) support of the English Crown, he sailed around the Caribbean and raided multiple Spanish colonies from Cuba to Venezuela in the 17th century. His clever battle tactics and wicked luck have been the basis of romantic privateering stories for hundreds of years.

On this day in 1671, Captain Morgan captured one his greatest targets, Panama City, looted it, burned it to the ground, and then reportedly left for home with most of the plunder instead of sharing it with his followers. The raid on Panama City took place shortly after the Treaty of Madrid was signed between England and France. The raid displeased the King as it put a wrench in English diplomatic efforts, so Morgan was arrested and brought back to London.

His detainment didn’t last long. Nor did England’s peace treaty with Spain. When King Charles II released Captain Morgan from detention, he also declared him the Governor of Jamaica.

Miscellaneous:
⦁ Pirates were stereotyped as being perpetually drunk, which was often true…the practice of adding rum to water (about 30+proof to be effective) was a common way of purifying water without boiling it; wine works better to purify water with 33-50% mixture because of the phenols in wine
