You’ve spent all your money. You’re hungover from consuming too much booze and food. You’ve already said all you wanted to say to the friends and relatives with whom you’ve shared the holidays but you are still sharing the same space. Luckily, competing in a card game can be accomplished in silence and at no additional cost.
Playing card games began in 9th century China in conjunction with preventing counterfeit forgery; the Tang Dynasty began using detailed images to decorate their paper money. Images on paper for game playing soon followed. The idea spread to India, Egypt, and Europe as a side effect of trade, and different cultures applied different types of images, card suits, and game rules. The modern card deck with four suits and 52 cards first appeared in France, then New Orleans, and sometime in the 1830s it was the standard poker deck on riverboats and saloons.
The most popular play-at-home card games in the U.S. include Spades, Poker, Old Maid, War, Hearts, Solitaire, Bridge, Go Fish, Uno, Gin Rummy, Pinochle, and Euchre.
