On this day in 1692, the witch trials began in Salem Village, Massachusetts, targeting three young women, Sarah Good, Sarah Osborne, and Tituba, who were all accused of witchcraft.
The girls were experiencing unusual fits and confessions, so accusations quickly escalated, leading to a series of hearings that would grip the community for months. As the hearings progressed, more and more individuals were accused, including several prominent members of the colony, and by the end of summer, the magistrates had overseen 20 executions.
The Massachusetts Bay Colony eventually recognized the Salem judgments as wrongful convictions and declared proceedings of this nature unlawful in 1711. The Salem witch trials remain a dark, iconic chapter in American history, illustrating the profound danger of mass hysteria and the irreparable damage that can be fueled by superstition and unfounded accusations.
