At the March 1991 World Figure Skating Championships, all three medals went to Americans for the first time ever. In fact, it was the first time any country had swept the competition. The winners were…
GOLD: Kristy Yamaguchi (a superstar who went on to win the 1992 Olympic Medal)
SILVER: Tonya Harding (a high scorer for technical merit)
BROZE: Nancy Kerrigan (a graceful crowd favorite)
On this day in 1994, on the eve of the Winter Olympic Games, Nancy Kerrigan was attacked by an unknown man at the U.S. Championships in Detroit, Michigan. The assailant used a police baton to strike Kerrigan on her landing knee. Tonya’s ex-husband, Jeff Gilhooly, was discovered to be the orchestrator of the attack and the assailant turned out to be Tonya Harding’s bodyguard.
Seven weeks later, both women competed in the Winter Olympics. Kerrigan won the silver medal after working hard through her injury and Harding finished in 8th place with a notable meltdown before the judges, blaming a missed jump on her skate’s laces.
Tonya Harding had no need to sabotage her competitors. She was the first American woman to successfully land a Triple Axel (and the second woman in the world to do so) and she had already won several skating awards on national and international levels. Harding denied any involvement in the planning of the attack on Kerrigan, but later pleaded guilty to conspiring to hinder the prosecution. On June 30, 1994, the United States Figure Skating Association banned her for life.
