On this day in 2009, US Airways Flight 1549 flew into a large flock of geese during its takeoff from LaGuardia Airport and lost the use of both engines over New York City.
Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger expertly piloted the powerless plane and landed on the Hudson River. All 155 passengers and crew were able to evacuate the plane safely. The pilots and flight attendants on Flight 1549 were awarded the Master’s Medal of the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators in recognition of their “heroic and unique aviation achievement.”

Cocktail Du Jour – Sully Cocktail
The Sully Cocktail was designed by Dale DeGroff for Keens Steakhouse in NYC. It’s a Manhattan with a “splash.”
- 5 oz rye whiskey
- 5 oz sweet vermouth
- A dash of Angostura Bitters
- A float of the best champagne you can afford
- A Manhattan cherry
Stir the rye, vermouth, and bitters in ice. Strain into a coupe or a Nick and Nora glass. Top carefully with the Champagne, ensuring that it floats on top of the cocktail. Drink the Champagne off the top of the drink first, and then slide a cherry into the bottom of the glass and say, “down she goes.”
Mocktail Du Jour – Sully Mocktail
- 5 oz cold Japanese barley tea
- 5 oz freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 5 teaspoon of honey
- 1 teaspoon of marmalade

Brew the tea and cool in the refrigerator. Stir all ingredients except for Sprite and cherry in ice until marmalade is dissolved. Strain into a coupe or a Nick and Nora glass.
