On this day in 1972 in Derry, Ireland, British troops opened fire and shot 26 unarmed Catholic civilians during a protest—it was a march against Internment Without a Trial. 14 civilians died from their wounds. Several of the victims were in the process of fleeing when they were shot, some victims were just attempting to help the wounded. It was the same battalion that had killed nine innocents at a similar protest six months earlier in Belfast, an event known as the Ballymurphy Massacre. After two investigations by the British government, the soldiers were cleared of any wrongdoing.
Initially the presence of the British Army in Northern Ireland was welcomed by the Catholics, who had been harassed by Protestant mobs, as they expected the soldiers to serve as a neutral force. But Bloody Sunday turned the Catholics against the military. The shootings fueled the resurgence of the Irish Republican Army (IRA), which would eventually kill more than 1,700 people between 1972 and 1998, until the signing of the Good Friday Agreement and their eventual disarmament. This period of conflict is known as “The Troubles.”
