Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day – January 31

Bubble wrap was invented in 1957 by two engineers, Marc Chavannes and Alfred Fielding. They knew they had something special, but they weren’t sure of the proper application. They first tried selling it as wallpaper, then as insulation for greenhouses. Four years later, IBM purchased it to protect their electronic equipment during shipping, and the creators finally understood the bubble wrap potential.

Spirit 95 Radio, a station in Bloomington, Indiana, received a shipment of microphones sealed in bubble wrap. They unwittingly unwrapped the mics on air on morning and received adoring messaging from their audience. This is how Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day came to be celebrated.
