On this day in 1835, Phineas T. Barnum started his first circus tour of the US called “The Greatest Show on Earth.”  P.T. Barnum was a showman with a gift for hype and exaggeration. He showcased exotic animals, acrobats, and embellished curiosities with a circus tour that would last 182 years until The Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus finally went out of business in 2017. 

Barnum’s Museum of in New York was drawing 400,000 visitors a year by 1946. He earned greater fame by taking one of his featured acts, Colonel Tom Thumb, the World’s Smallest Man, to perform for England’s Queen Victoria. Amidst constant criticism by elites, Barnum’s exploits transformed the nature of commercial entertainment and promotion in America, launching an enduring methodology for serving organized entertainment to the average citizen.
