Ruth Bader Ginsburg Day – March 15th

“For women, she was the most important legal advocate in American history. She changed the way the law sees gender.” ─ Abbe Gluck, Professor, Yale Law School

On this day in 1933, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (nicknamed the Notorious RBG while on the bench) was born in a low-income neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, just 13 years after the 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote. She was one out of only eight women at Harvard Law School in a class of over 500. The male students complained that these eight women were taking up valuable space that could have been filled with deserving men. She persevered to become the first female member of The Harvard Law Review. RBG still had problems getting a job after graduation because of her gender, even with a spectacular academic record and impressive recommendations.

The discrimination she faced forged the shape of her career to come. As the Director of the Women’s Rights Project of the American Civil Liberties Union, she argued six landmark cases on gender equality before the U.S. Supreme Court, including the first Supreme Court acknowledgement that the U.S. Constitution prohibits discrimination based on gender.

In 1993, RBG became the second woman to serve as a U.S. Supreme Court Justice, appointed by President Clinton. She became the leader of the court’s liberal wing and was known for her biting common-sense dissent statements to conservative verdicts with which she wholeheartedly disagreed. RBG died in office in 2020 at the age of 87. Immediately following the announcement of her death, an impromptu vigil was held in her honor at the steps of the Supreme Court with hundreds of mourners paying tribute to the popular justice who had coined the phrase “Women belong in all places where decisions are being made.” Since her death, the Supreme Court has repealed Roe vs. Wade, banned Affirmative Action, and more right-leaning court decisions are expected in her absence.
