On this day, sometime around 3,000 BC, Princess Diana of Themyscira was “born” when the gods brought her to life from a clay sculpture crafted by her mother, Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons. The gods had gifted her with special powers ─ “As lovely as Aphrodite, as wise as Athena, with the speed of Mercury, and the strength of Hercules.” The Amazons raised Diana on Paradise Island and taught her lessons of love and peace and most importantly, how to fight like a beautiful, badass warrior.
Diana’s first appearance was in All-Star Comics #8 in October 1941, just before the US entered World War II. William Moulton Marston, a co-inventor of the polygraph (hence the Lasso of Truth) created the wholesome superhero with his wife and fellow psychologist, Elizabeth. Marston was a feminist who believed females to be the superior sex. They assigned attributes to Wonder Woman to make her an ideal leader that should be ruling the world.
Over the decades, Wonder Woman has been wildly popular with girls and boys alike, and like all major superheroes, she has been reimagined many times at DC Comics and in film to girl-power new generations of fans. The 2017 Warner Brothers blockbuster was the first superhero movie with a female protagonist (played by Gal Gadot) and directed by a woman (Patty Jenkins).
“Not even girls want to be girls so long as our feminine archetype lacks force, strength, and power. Not wanting to be girls, they don’t want to be tender, submissive, peace-loving as good women are. Women’s strong qualities have become despised because of their weakness. The obvious remedy is to create a feminine character with all the strength of Superman plus all the allure of a good and beautiful woman.” — William Moulton Marston
