On this day in 1974, a farmer outside of Xi’an was digging a well on his property and discovered the burial site of China’s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang Di, who died in 210 BC. It turned out to be one of the greatest archeological discoveries in history.
Emperor Qin (pronounced “Chin”) was the first leader to unify all seven territories following the 250-year Warring States Period. The emperor’s mausoleum was guarded by more than 7,000 life-size terracotta soldiers in very good condition, each with different faces and expressions ─ it is speculated they were modeled after real people. The statues, weapons, and artifacts found here provided overwhelming evidence of the power, wealth, influence, and artistry of the ancient Qin Dynasty, from which China got its name.
