Holiday: Peter Weyland Day
The sandwich is named after John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich in 18th century Kent, England. The rumor was that Montagu would ask his servants to bring him slices of meat between two slices of bread while at the gambling tables. Other gamblers began to order “the same as Sandwich!”, and thus the name “sandwich” became a common menu item. Another explanation from the Earl’s biographer, N.A.M. Rodger, is that the Earl’s dedication to the navy, politics, and the arts led to him consuming sandwiches at his work desk as he rarely had time to sit down to enjoy a meal. You are free to choose the version of the story that seems right to you.
Sandwiches have since exploded in variety and creativity and have made the world a better place to live. Happy Sandwich Day! You know what to do.
