Holiday: Peter Weyland Day
Remember, remember, the fifth of November
Gunpowder treason and plot
We see no reason
Why Gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot….
Guy Fawkes Day is a celebration in the U.K. of a tragedy averted. In 1605, Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was arrested while guarding 36 barrels of gunpowder placed beneath the House of Lords, which is similar to the U.S. Senate. Catholic conspirators had been upset that the Catholic King, James I, had refused to grant greater religious tolerance to Catholics. Upset enough to blow him up and all the Lords with him.
King James’ supporters around London lit bonfires to celebrate the fact that the King had survived this bold attempt on his life. Guy Fawkes was executed with other conspirators and a few months later the introduction of the Observance of 5th November Act created an annual holiday of thanksgiving for the plot’s failure.
Guy Fawkes Day is celebrated with parades, fireworks, and bonfires. Straw effigies of Fawkes are tossed on the bonfire. One tradition is for children to carry these effigies, called “Guys,” through the streets in the days leading up the holiday and ask passersby for “A penny for the Guy?”

This recipe is from cravingsofalunatic.com
- 1 inch piece of ginger peeled and cut into coins
- 2 cinnamon sticks broken
- 2 star anise
- 1-1/4 teaspoons of black peppercorns
- 6 whole cloves
- 4 cardamom pods
- 1/8 teaspoon of freshly grated nutmeg
- 6 cups of cold water
- 1 vanilla bean sliced lengthwise
- 5 black tea bags
- 2 cups of milk
- 1/3 cup of packed light brown sugar
- 1 oz bourbon per serving (more if your bonfire is small)
In a plastic bag, add the cinnamon sticks, star anise, black peppercorns, cloves, and cardamom pods. Lightly crush and pour into a medium saucepan. Add the ginger, water and the seeds of the vanilla bean and the scraped vanilla pod to the saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium high heat. When the mixture is boiling, reduce to a simmer for 10 minutes, partially covered.
Remove the pan from the heat and add the tea bags. Let steep for 5 to 7 minutes and then remove the tea bags. Add the sugar and the milk, whisking thoroughly over high heat until the mixture is brought to a simmer (DO NOT BOIL). Pour into mugs and add the bourbon.
Garnish cup with whipped cream, freshly grated nutmeg, and a cinnamon stick.
