“Bake an apple pie!” Carl Sagan said. “If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe.” (Cosmos, 1980).
Carl Sagan was born this day in 1934. He spent most of his career as a professor of astronomy at Cornell University, where he directed the Laboratory for Planetary Studies. He was a famous astronomer, planetary scientist, cosmologist, astrophysicist, and astrobiologist, with a popular TV series “Cosmos” and several award-winning books. An early climate change champion in the 1960s, he identified the climate of Venus as a possible outcome of the greenhouse of an atmosphere filled with carbon dioxide and water vapor.
Sagan helped craft the first physical message to any alien species, placed on Pioneer 10 and 11, the first NASA missions that would leave our solar system. He also pioneered exobiology and promoted the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) organization.

Cocktail Du Jour – Cosmo
- 5 oz lemon vodka
- 1 oz cranberry juice
- 5 teaspoons of lime juice, freshly squeezed
- 1 oz triple sec
Add all ingredients to a shaker with ice and shake for 20 seconds. Pour into a martini glass and garnish with a lemon twist.
Mocktail Du Jour – Cosmos Mocktail
- 4 oz cranberry juice
- 2 oz club soda
- 1 oz orange juice
- 5 oz lime juice
Add cranberry juice, orange juice and lime juice to a shaker with ice and shake for 20 seconds. Pour into a martini glass, top with club soda, and garnish with a lemon twist.
