Holiday: Peter Weyland Day
Fearless Australian zookeeper, Steve Irwin, is celebrated internationally today for his contributions to wild animal conservation and promoting public awareness about the environment. He became famous from his hit show, “Crocodile Hunter,” which he hosted with his wife, Terri, from 1996 to his untimely death in 2006 involving a stingray. The documentary series became Animal Planet’s highest-rated series with an international following. Steve’s animated awe and risky dabbling with creatures big and small made for an irresistible show.
In 2002 he founded Wildlife Warriors Worldwide, a conservationist group with a mission to protect endangered species and wild animals at risk. After his death, the snail species Crikey Steveirwini and the asteroid 57567 Crikey were named in his honor. He was survived by his wife Terri, and his children, Bindi and Robert, who have all continued his legacy at the Australian Zoo and on television.
