Holiday: Peter Weyland Day
American musician, supermodel, and showman extraordinaire, Rupaul Andre Charles, was born on this day in 1960 in San Diego, California. His song, Supermodel (You Better Work), earned him international acclaim in 1992 and reached #2 of the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart.
Known affectionately as the Queen of Drag, Ru Paul has popularized, enhanced, and normalized the art of drag performance in the U.S. and around the world with his Drag Race reality show as well as multiple spin-offs. Drag Race personnel screen video submissions each year to select a dozen or so drag queens to compete for “America’s Next Drag Superstar.” Runways and challenges are judged each week by Ru Paul, Michelle Visage, and a rotating panel of celebrities. Ru Paul is the Guinness World Records title holder for most Emmy wins (12) for Outstanding Host of a Reality/Competition Program.
A performance on Drag Race has provided dozens of drag queens a life-changing celebrity status. Drag Race shows are available on ParamountPlus, Hulu, Amazon Prime, MTV, and other networks. World of Wonder Presents Plus (WOW) is a subscription streaming service that offers several of Ru Paul’s shows, including international Drag Races in the UK, Canada, Australia, Italy, Spain, France, Holland, Thailand, and the Philippines.
