Holiday: Peter Weyland Day
The Catholic All Saints Day is a solemn holiday to honor martyrs, and Halloween provides scary mischief and sugar, but the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos is a joyful two-day celebration to show love for deceased family members, rather than a time of mourning or fright. The ancient tradition comes from native populations who thought it was disrespectful to mourn the dead, because their spirits are still a part of the community.
On these two days, a portal between the living world and the spirit world opens for deceased loved ones to visit us. We can cook grandma’s favorite meal or serve grandpa’s favorite drink and let them know what’s happened while they’ve been gone. On November 1st, the children who have passed have access to our dimension, followed by the adults who have passed that visit on November 2nd. Family members prepare altars for their ancestors and decorate gravesites. Celebrants wear traditional clothing and paint their faces with skulls and flowers. The marigold is especially symbolic, intended to guide spirits back home.
