In 1202, Italian mathematician Leonardo of Pisa, also known as Fibonacci, introduced a numbering sequence to Western European mathematics in his Book of Calculation. November 23 is celebrated as Fibonacci day because of the date written in the mm/dd format as 11/23. In the Fibonacci sequence each number is the sum of the two preceding ones. Starting from 0 and 1, the sequence begins: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144…
Fibonacci numbers were initially described by Indian mathematicians as early as 200 BC ─ Pingala used them to enumerate the patterns possible in Sanskrit poetry. Fibonacci used them to estimate the number of rabbits a single mating pair could produce in a year. It turned out that the Fibonacci sequence is a significant numeric series in nature: the nautilus shell, natural plant and flower petal design, hurricanes, galaxies, and DNA molecules all follow the same sequence.

Cocktail Du Jour – Fibonacci in Autumn

Philly bartender, Paul MacDonald invented the Fibonacci Cocktail system using five ingredients combined in the ratio of the first five numbers in the sequence — 1:1:2:3:5. Specifically, MacDonald uses ¼ oz of ingredient A, ¼ oz of B, ½ oz of C, ¾ oz of D and 1¼ oz of E.

  • 25 oz Cocchi Americano
  • 25 oz Cappelletti Aperitivo
  • 5 oz Laird’s 100 Apple Brandy
  • 75 oz Green Chartreuse
  • 25 oz Amaro Nardini

 

Set up each spirit measured out in a separate glass for effect. Then combine them and stir with ice. Strain into an old-fashioned glass. Garnish with citrus peel shaped into a Fibonacci spiral.

 

Mocktail Du Jour – Fibonacci on the Fritz Mocktail 

Based on the recipe by Chelsea Santos and Shaker & Spoon:

 

Combine all ingredients into shaker with ice and shake. Strain into coupe glass.
