Holiday: Peter Weyland Day

On this day in 1971, D. B. Cooper bought a one-way ticket from Portland to Seattle on Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 305. Once the plane was in the air, he gave a note to a flight attendant that said he was hijacking the plane. Then he opened his briefcase to reveal a bomb. His demands upon landing in Seattle were to be given $200,000 in $20 bills, two parachutes, and a full tank of gas for the plane. All of which were provided.

36 passengers deboarded in Seattle, but Cooper kept two pilots, a flight engineer, and a flight attendant. He ordered them to head to Mexico City and to keep the plane low, below 10,000 feet. Somewhere over Ariel, Washington, he parachuted off the plane into the night with his money and disappeared. Over the next five years, 800 suspects were questioned by the FBI to no avail. It’s the FBI’s only unsolved skyjacking case, but an excellent suspect died in 2023 at age 94.

Cocktail Du Jour – I am DB Cooper Cocktail

This recipe comes from bartender, Davin Affrunti

• 2 oz rye
• 75 oz rosemary-infused maple syrup*
• 75 oz freshly squeezed lime juice
• 3 dashes (not drops) Angostura bitters
• Douglas fir eau de vie

Rinse an Old Fashioned glass with eau de vie. Shake in a cocktail shaker and double-strain all ingredients into glass over a large ice cube. Garnish with a slapped rosemary sprig.

*To infuse the syrup, simmer 3 inches of water in a pot on the stove. Put your syrup in a mason jar and add 3 large sprigs of rosemary to the jar. Cover jar loosely with tin foil and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove jar from water and let syrup cool before removing the rosemary.

Mocktail Du Jour – I am DB Cooper Mocktail

• 2 oz Zero Proof Whiskey Alternative
• 75 oz rosemary-infused maple syrup*
• 75 oz freshly squeezed lime juice
