Holiday: Peter Weyland Day
On this day in 1865, Lewis Carol’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was first published in the United States and has never been out of print since. The story ushered in a new age of children’s literature that was intended to entertain young readers, rather than to instruct them.
Alice is sitting on a riverbank when she is surprised to see a white rabbit holding a pocket watch and wearing a waistcoat. He disappears into a rabbit hole and she follows. Underground, Alice discovers an entire new world, full of talking animals and strange creatures and odd magic.
The characters, props, and language from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland have all become iconic and metaphoric as generations of children have relived Alice’s journey in books and film.
