On this day during the 1987 U.S. Open tournament, John McEnroe was fined for three violations of the Code of Conduct during his five-set victory over Slobodan Zivojinovic. Fines were assigned for: Swearing multiple times at Richard Ings (the Chair Umpire), ball abuse, and swearing at a television soundman.
Later McEnroe said to the umpire, “Thanks for ruining another match for me! You going to try to set the Guinness Book of World Records for f$*k!ng me?” By the end of the day McEnroe’s penalties amounted to $17,500 plus a two-month game suspension by Grand Prix Supervisor Ken Farrar, who said, “I can’t believe I’ve heard a more vile, disgusting attack on a chair umpire.”
Other tennis players have received larger fines in the sport, but being angry and vocal during his matches was expected of John McEnroe and one of the reasons his fans always tuned in to see him play.

The U.S. Open has sold over a million honey deuces since they made it their signature drink in 2007. They cost $20.00 each.
⦁ 1.5 oz vodka (Grey Goose® is used at the Open)
⦁ 3 oz freshly squeezed lemonade
⦁ 0.5 oz raspberry liquor
Shake ingredients in cocktail shaker over ice. Strain over ice in a tall glass. Garnish with a spear of three honeydew melon balls.
Mocktail du Jour – You Cannot Be Serious!
We’re going for a honey deuce with a pinch of contempt for this mocktail. “You cannot be serious,” is a famous McEnroe comment and also the name of his autobiography.
⦁ 4 oz freshly squeezed lemonade
⦁ 1 oz ⦁ raspberry syrup
⦁ 1 oz for ⦁ Ritual Zero Proof Tequila
⦁ ½ jalapeno pepper
Deseed and thinly slice half of a pepper. Muddle pepper in cocktail shaker with the Zero Proof Tequila. Add other ingredients and ice and then shake. Strain over ice in a tall glass. Garnish with a spear of three honeydew melon balls.
